Why is there a change?
To allow us to help as many people as possible we have to make changes in the way that we operate, resources are limited and failing to do so would mean that we would have to cap our membership to a limited few, which in turn would lower our income meaning that there would be less choice for the members. Making small changes in the way we work will benefit everyone and will also sustain the pantry model for many years to come.
What will change?
Right now we offer a weekly shopping for the equivalent to £2.31 per week. For this price our members can receive: -
2 Red Items
3 Blue Items
8 Green Items
Free pet food, potatoes, fruit & vegetables, non selling products (meat free sausages etc), & Greggs savoury's and cakes etc.
We ran a survey in January and the average shopping cost to KLSB for each member was £27.63.
Unfortunately we are unable to sustain this cost long-term and without change the pantry would eventually close .
To allow us to provide the very best for our members our new operation will provide the member with: -
3 Red Items
7 Green Items
Free Greggs savoury`s and cakes when available.
Red items will be 1 item(s) from the freezer and 2 from the red shelf.
Green items can include what you would expect from the green shelf but will now also incorporate fruit & vegetables including potatoes, household & personal necessities and and pet food.

Why not just increase the membership fee?
We are very keen on keeping the cost to the pantry to a minimum whilst still offering our members value for money.
KLSB are a non profit organisation and as such we rely heavily on donations, however we also buy in much of the products that you see on the shelf, this is where the £10.00 per month goes to. By keeping the membership costs the same and increasing the membership will bring in more revenue, in turn this will enable us to purchase a wider variety of goods as well as fresh items including bread, milk, eggs, fruit & veg etc.

How much fruit and veg will I be allowed?
Fruit & vegetables will be measured out to make it fair on everyone. The weights have yet to be decided but for example, if we said that each person in the household were entitled to 1kg of fruit & veg, then that would mean that a family of 4 would have 4kg where a family of 2 would have 2kg. The fruit & veg will also be a pick n mix. Please note that fruit & veg might not be available every week.
When will the changes take effect?
March 1st 2020
We hope that you will all understand our decision on this change but we feel that it is vital to ensure that the pantry offers the best value for money to as many people as possible.
